Adding Sound To My Existing Compositions... Dissolve

1) Dissolve

This was done as part of a tutorial in adding sound to my compositions.

Adding Sound To My Existing Compositions... Zoom

This was done as part of a tutorial in adding sound to compositions...

1) Zoom:

For this example, I prepared my asset in Photoshop...

Silent Movie... Evaluation

This was a great project to work on and a really good way of introducing After Effects. I never thought I was capable of doing motion graphics, which is just my lack in confidence, but with the tutorials from Mike I built a basic understanding of After Effects and what it's for. Before the start of this brief After Effects was like another planet to me, I didn't know very much about video formats (PAL/NTSC) or the title/action safe zones.

I think my final pieces communicate the words successfully, however I think my low confidence shows, as my ideas aren't very exciting, not that they need to be. My first piece for Zoom was created in the last few days of the project, when I decided to be brave and create a Photoshop asset, and import it to After Effects. I wish I had done this with my other ideas!

I found it hard to animate the ideas for Dissolve in After Effects without using effects, I think with more knowledge and confidence I could have produced something more innovative.

I couldn't help but hear sounds in my head when animating the words, so I am really looking forward to creating some more complex animations in my next project.
When researching for examples of kinetic typography I was quite amazed at what could be done using After Effects, and made me all the more eager to use it and learn more.

Silent Movie... Crit and Evaluation

Action Plan:

- Look at colour... instead of just black and white (use Photoshop to achieve gradients etc. instead of just block colour)
- Look at fonts... not just Helvetica!
- Investigate the use of cameras.
- Develop more ideas for dissolve without using effects.
- Select finals.

Silent Movie... Final Pieces

My Final for Zoom:

For this one I have chosen the idea that shows both extremes of the word, 'zoom in' and 'zoom out'. It was easy to select the final for this word, as this is the only one where I had used an asset from Photoshop, instead of editing the text directly in After Effects.

My Final for Click:

For this one, I selected the most simplest idea, as I felt it actually communicated the idea the strongest. While creating this I couldn't help but add sound in my head!

My Final for Dissolve:

This idea combined a Scatter effect and an adjustment in opacity. I was glad I found Scatterize as I had no idea how to create this effect any other way, this is exactly how I visualised the idea in my head. Again, all I could hear in my head when creating this was the 'white noise' sound when the television goes fuzzy.

Silent Movie... Experiments Part 4

This is a very simple animation and looks at adjusting the position of each character individually.

I combined the two definitions of zoom within this idea, I started with the beginning of the previous animation, and then the characters meet in the middle as they move back across the screen before 'zooming out'.

On this composition I have introduced the idea of a camera and working in 3D.

This idea is not a very polished one, it is an experiment with the camera again but with elements at different depths.

This is still quite a simple animation, but it is my most adventurous yet. Instead of working directly into After Effects I have created an asset in Photoshop.

Silent Movie... Experiments Part 3

This is another composition I created for Click:

1) This is quite an obvious example showing the words 'clicking' into place.

Click 5 from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

The following compositions are for the word Zoom:

2) This is quite straight forward, a continuous steady zoom in on the word. To achieve this I have adjusted the scale of the layer.

Zoom from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

3) This composition is a variation on the previous one, however in the last few frames, the word zooms quickly out again.

Zoom 2 from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

4) This is a continuous zoom out on the word.

Zoom 3 from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

5) This is a variation on the previous composition.

Zoom 4 from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

6) Here, I have looked at adjusting each letterform individually instead of by the whole word.

Zoom 5 from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

7) This again looks at adjusting the scale of each letterform individually, and then scaling all of the letters into the background simultaneously.

Zoom 6 from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

8) This composition has been created editing scale and opacity.

Zoom 7 from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

9) Here, I have looked at the word zoom in a different way; as in, to 'zoom' by, so instead of editing the scale, I have manipulated the position.

Zoom 8 from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

10) This composition is based on the original interpretation of the word zoom, manipulating the scale; each letterform zooms out slightly before returning to original scale size, before the word zooms out into the background.

Experiments Part 2...

The following experiments are for the word Click, using Helvetica:

1) For this I have animated using the position controls and scale. I like this composition as the text appears as if it is being clicked on.

Click from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

2) The next one, is very simple, only adjusting the position of each character.

The version that isn't clipped before the end!

Click 2 Edit from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

3) This is a variation on the previous one incorporating rotation. No matter how many times I upload this, the 'K' still doesn't work, yet the movie works in After Effects!

4) This ties in Clip 1 and Clip 3.

Click 4 from Gemma Byrne on Vimeo.

Experiments...

The following experiments are with text layers on After Effects using Helvetica.

1) To create this I applied the filter, Scatterize with a right twist.
2) This is using the Scatter style, and adjusting the opacity.

3) This has been created by adding the Dust and Scratches filter.

Storyboarding...

Also we learnt how to storyboard, this is a very good way of presenting, organising and creating ideas for animation. Instead of creating them on one sheet, we used 25 separate ones, to enable us to shuffle frames around or re-order the sequence. On each sheet the Title Safe and Action Safe Zones were marked out to familiarise us with the idea of sticking to the boundaries.

I started with the letter Z that started off the screen and moved in from the bottom left hand corner, it then transformed into an L, then a (chunky) C, followed by an F and rotated 360 degrees while scaling right down so the letter is invisible in the last frame.

Flipbook...

Today we learnt to make a flip book using post-it notes, to experiment with animation. This gave me a better idea of how animation works, as I had never really had much experience of animation before.

It begins as a C made up of 8 dots, and over each frame the shape loses a dot until there is a single dot left which grows into a circle, and transforms into a G, and rotates 180 degrees before ending up as a back to front E.

Click Ideas...

Possible fonts from Da Font
The types of font I have searched for, for this word are computer-type fonts. The word click to me, makes me think of computers, and mouse-clicks... It also makes me think of the sound of a click, like a light switch, a mouse, or clicking of the fingers. As this is a silent movie brief, these could be visually represented as short, staccato movements.

Silent Movie... Dissolve Ideas

Possible fonts from Dafont.com:

Some of these fonts would work great for dissolve, as they already appear to be a bit sketchy, which could be further explored and broken down. On the other hand, I could use a plain solid font, and then transform it.
