Image... Editorial: Doctor, doctor

Development for the Doctor, Doctor article:

- Cell idea taken from rough illustrations in sketchbook, grey outline to represent the older generation.

- Experimenting with blue; gives a more clinical, medical feel.

- Reverting back to grey and experimenting with complimentary grey hair!

- Adding in a subtle hint of colour, still keeping the grey too. The illustration is beginning to look more refined.

- Trialling out including a walking stick and omitting the hair. I have also gone back to the blue as the grey is no longer necessary in representing the target audience, and the blue will compliment the existing illustration for the other article.

- Here I have added back in the grey hair. I think this works, and therefore this is ready to be placed in the article.

Image... Editorial Articles

This is a question and answer page and the illustration to be produced is for the medical questions, so the theme is health. The tone of voice is quite serious and informative. Visually, there are so many different ideas that can be done, as health is a broad topic. I would really like to use photography for this article in a way that complements the existing imagery.

This page needs two images, one for a article about the mind perceiving numbers in quite a light hearted manner, and the other article is about Facebook, and the number of friends a person and their partner has, which personally I find a load of rubbish! The ideas for the first image are mainly illustration based, a weak area of mine, and would illustrate some of the humourous ideas in the piece such as the 'Latte Factor'. The Facebook article would feature something maths related in conjunction with the Facebook logo.

Humorous article about the writer's New Year's Resolutions, again, this article produces so many visual ideas, and I think an illustration/comic style would be appropriate for this one.

Top Ten... Brainstorm

As my chosen subject matter is Female Icons, I need to brainstorm associations to do with this topic, and from there I can get some visual stimuli...

Top Ten... Choosing The Subject Matter

I am still unclear about my subject matter on the Top Ten brief, my crit is next Wednesday so I really need to pick a topic tomorrow and begin coming up with some ideas...

Possible topics:

- Top Ten Most Amusing Cocktail Names.
This would be a good choice, I love alcohol, especially cocktails, and they always seem to have some cringey names, which sometimes bring embarrassed faces at the bar!

- Top Ten Best Phobias.
A very common but irrational occurrence in life, I have a phobia of spiders and thunder and lightning... Investigating this may even cure them!

- Top Ten Female Icons.
This would be a really cool one to do, I have quite a lot of visuals thinking of this already!

- Top Ten Worst Lies Men Tell To Get Out Of Housework.
This would be a really interesting topic to investigate, it would grass in the idle men, or indeed educate the ones who aren't afraid of the mop.

- Top Ten Idents.
Incredibly appropriate to the current module, although there isn't a great range of visual stimuli other than the ident itself.

Silent Movie... Evaluation

This was a great project to work on and a really good way of introducing After Effects. I never thought I was capable of doing motion graphics, which is just my lack in confidence, but with the tutorials from Mike I built a basic understanding of After Effects and what it's for. Before the start of this brief After Effects was like another planet to me, I didn't know very much about video formats (PAL/NTSC) or the title/action safe zones.

I think my final pieces communicate the words successfully, however I think my low confidence shows, as my ideas aren't very exciting, not that they need to be. My first piece for Zoom was created in the last few days of the project, when I decided to be brave and create a Photoshop asset, and import it to After Effects. I wish I had done this with my other ideas!

I found it hard to animate the ideas for Dissolve in After Effects without using effects, I think with more knowledge and confidence I could have produced something more innovative.

I couldn't help but hear sounds in my head when animating the words, so I am really looking forward to creating some more complex animations in my next project.
When researching for examples of kinetic typography I was quite amazed at what could be done using After Effects, and made me all the more eager to use it and learn more.

Silent Movie... Crit and Evaluation

Action Plan:

- Look at colour... instead of just black and white (use Photoshop to achieve gradients etc. instead of just block colour)
- Look at fonts... not just Helvetica!
- Investigate the use of cameras.
- Develop more ideas for dissolve without using effects.
- Select finals.
